On July 11, large numbers of LENIs were reported at the middle pond of the Santa Maria Mesa Road Ponds hotspot. I (and other birders) went out on July 12 and observed around 30 LENIs foraging at this pond. I'm assuming this show is in response to some kind of hatch that really draws the birds in at this time of year. Not sure how long it will last. If you have the time and inclination, it really is fun to study this species at relatively close quarters. If you are a better photographer than me (not hard to do), there should also be some good photo opportunities. I'm guessing it will continue for a few days at least.
