New arrivals today were a single alternate-plumaged Short-billed Dowitcher and a few Sanderlings. One of the Sanderlings was really handsome with a deep russet-colored head. Small Sandpipers (Western and Least) were found in modest numbers at the far western end of the beach just before it turns more to the south.
Large Shorebirds continue to enjoy the abundance of sandcrabs and other crustaceans that Nick alluded to yesterday. I had my highest count of the season for Long-billed Curlews this morning: an incredible 70 birds.
The Heerman's Gull flock was down to 50 today and quickly dissipated. The group of four Royal Terns included one very young juvenile.
The Dune pond shorebirds were only 2 Greater Yellowlegs and two Kildeer. There were no shorebirds except for 2 Kildeer at Devereux Slough as viewed from the broken bridge overlook.
