An ASH-THROATED FLYCATCHER showed up briefly behind the General's Residence at Fort Mason this morning, a sign that post-breeding dispersal is underway. On Thursday, a WESTERN TANAGER was in the garden at Fort Mason, and SAVANNAH SPARROWS have arrived at Crissy Field. Shorebirds are coming back, many still in alternative plumage (including WESTERN SANDPIPERS at Quartermaster Reach, and WILLETS at Heron's Head that sported breeding plumage). Since the beginning of the month, I've spotted 11 species on shorebirds, including SNOWY PLOVERS at Sunset Dunes Park on Friday (first reported by Rob Cullison on Thursday). A newly fledged ELEGANT TERN at Crissy Lagoon this morning confused me (its straight short bill and almost entirely white head had me speculating about other tern species).
