I visited a friend who has property out in the country outside of Union City, with a large 25 acre or so planting of a mix of white pine, Scots pine, Norway spruce and hemlock as well as deciduous mature woods, and younger woods and pond. She sends me updates on birds she has heard or found with Merlin. I got up there two days ago to finally do a real checklist as there has not been any atlas activity in this block other than a list I did last year during the eclipse !
My best finds were confirming her fledgling barred owls, as well as singing brown creepers and golden-crowned kinglets, blue-headed vireos, veery, as well as Acadian flycatchers. It was interesting to see them using the darker hemlock woods and also the thick deciduous woods next to the pond where I find them more in southern areas. A good mix of woodpeckers were present as well, and the expected hooded warblers, tanagers, etc. I imagine I can add more with future visits but it was nice to see a different area other than my own county and find a few little gems, plus young barred owls are so wonderful to see anytime, even if they make a rather chilling harsh call.
There's still lots of breeding activity out there to enjoy for another week or two before the end of the "high" season,
