Subject: [NHBirds] New Cliff Swallow nesting location, Downtown Dover
This spring and summer, I have had a higher than usual number of sightings
of Cliff Swallows at my patch in Dover. While not entirely unprecedented,
the Washington Street Mill colony is just a ways downriver, I saw them
enough that I began to suspect they may have a nest in the immediate area.
While watching the sunset a few days ago from the Chestnut Street Bridge, I
saw a pair of Cliff Swallows come into roost, and this afternoon with my
kayak I was able to confirm there is a brand new nesting site at this
location. It's just a single nest, but it does show an exciting expansion
of where this species is nesting in Dover.
