Yesterday, 7/7/2025, Piming & Judy Kuo and my wife and I went looking for painted buntings again. We were able to repeat the sighting of ONE female/immature male at the site discovered the day before at the intersection of Canyon Creek Blvd and Prairie Star Pkwy (coordinates: 38.958099, -94.879799). The bird was not deterred by the presence of a riding mower that was zipping about. Driving on and after a few unsuccessful checks along the way, we ended up at W. 92nd Ter@ Pickering St. (Coordinates: 38.959480, -94.880954). There, TWO female/immature male painted buntings appeared. They were skittish, making photography difficult.
Two shots, of mediocre quality, may be viewed here:
https://ebird.org/checklist/S258124094 It was only after the road trip did we realize that the sites of 7/6/2025 (“Sixth Location”) and 7/7 were only 600 feet apart. Therefore, it appears that the woods in the northwest quadrant of the intersection of Highways 7 and 10 in Lenexa, Kansas is the summer home of multiple individuals of Passerina ciris.
