Dear Tweeters, A relatively new birder, a friend of mine, just sent me a photo that he had taken in March in the Great Lakes region. I am puzzled. The bird looks like it could be a cross between a Herring Gull and a Lesser Black-backed Gull, with the dark (but not black) mantle of a LBBG, but pink legs and baleful eye of an American Herring Gull. It sort of looks like it could have been a Slaty-backed Gull, which would be quite a rare find on the shores of Lake Erie. If any gull aficionados in Tweeter Land would like to look at the photo and render an opinion, or even a guess, please contact me off-list, and I will send the one photo that he shared with me.
