Subject: Spring bird festival at Angel Lake in the East Humboldt Range
We were returning to Reno from a wildflower trip in Idaho yesterday when we decided to stop at Angel Lake, just outside of Wells, NV. The road up the mountain goes through a lot of sagebrush and mountain brush, some aspen and junipers and higher up into mountain mahogany and Limber Pines at about 8,400 feet.

At our first stop in a brushy area, we greatly enjoyed seeing and hearing Lazuli Buntings, Black-headed Grosbeaks, Yellow Warblers, Vesper and Brewer’s Sparrows, towhees, with Lewis’s Woodpeckers flying by. The hills were covered by wildflowers and blooming mountain brush - yellow, red, blue, pink, purple, and white.

At Angel Lake, bright with large snow patches and waterfalls, we were happy to hear the harmonic songs of Swainson’s Thrushes as well as singing Fox Sparrows on the steep aspen covered slopes. We saw other sparrows, including a Lark Sparrow, as well as flycatchers, raptors, ravens and hummingbirds.
