This weekend with a forecast of light wind I birded the Outer Point
Saturday and Sunday. Friday overnight and into early morning saw minimal
wind generally from southerly directions and fairly high overcast (above
the lighthouse) at Sat. dawn. I am aware that Friday was quite a good day
out here so some (many?) of these birds are continuing below. Sorry, I do
not know who found everything.. The consensus among observers at the point
is that it was good, but considering the weather there could have been more
arrivals. Those I spent solid periods of time birding with included: Lucas
Stephenson, Ethan Matsuyama, Julian Johnson, Mark Butler, Mary Anne
Rotella, Everett Clark, Bob Atwood, Derek Lecy, Connor Cochrane, Tony
Briggs, Renee Masotti, Derek Heins and Teale Fristoe. A list of
migrants/notables I saw follows:
LIGHTHOUSE:
2 Pewee
1 MOCKINGBIRD
2+ Waxwing
1 YELLOW-HEADED BLACKBIRD (AHY F?) flew in off the ocean, where it circled
once and then departed towards Nunes without landing.
1 Tennessee Warbler
2 Rose-breasted Grosbeaks, a SY and a TY male?
2 Lazuli Bunting
1 Lazuli/Indigo Bunting (female)
NUNES RANCH:
1 WHITE-WINGED DOVE was with Collared-Doves, and singing
1 Olive-sided Flycatcher
1 YELLOW-HEADED BLACKBIRD… AHY F?... around 10:30 flew in and found the cow
slop.
1 Tennessee
1 Yellowthroat (migrant?)
1 warbler sp. could have been a number of quite good birds, but it got
away.
1 Western Tanager
1 Rose-breasted Grosbeak
1 Black-headed Grosbeak
FISH DOCKS:
1 CALIFORNIA SCRUB-JAY
2 Rose-breasted Grosbeaks
NEW WILLOWS
1 W-w Pewee
1 Western Kingbird
1 Tennessee in lower willows
1 Redstart in Upper willows
1 Grasshopper Sparrow
1 Parula
1 Bunting, heard, which Connor Cochrane saw and told me was an Indigo.
DRAKE’S:
2 Cinnamon Teal
HORSESHOE POND:
1 Red-necked Phalarope
1 Semipalmated Plover was seen by Lucas Stephenson while I was next to him,
but I chose to take my sweet time looking and missed it.
Sunday wind was light out of the NW in the morning (5-6 mph at the
lighthouse) with a low, patchy and misty marine layer. The Lighthouse never
was out of the fog in the morning, Nunes was below for most of the morning,
Nunes plateau in the fog, etc. I birded primarily with Lucas Stephenson,
Mark Butler, Mary Anne Rotella, Everett Clark, and Bob Atwood. A general
list of migrants/notables follows:
FISH DOCKS:
1 Grasshopper Sparrow
1 W-w Pewee
1 Willow Flycatcher
1 Western Flycatcher
NEW WILLOWS
1 W-w Pewee
MENDOZA ANNEX:
1 Western Wood-Pewee
SPALETTA:
About 60 Tricolored Blackbirds were here. There were scattered numbers
elsewhere on the point this weekend, but this was the largest concentration.
DRAKE’S:
2 Cinnamon Teal
On my way home I stopped at White House Pool, running into Lisa Hug and the
YAMS, who showed me the continuing Yellow-breasted Chat. A Crossbill flew
over me as I walked back to my car.
