This morning, I was out to the small ponds on Selby Rd at the Ohio State University agricultural research center located just south of Wooster. There was a report on the Wayne County rare bird alert that these birds were there again this year. They were breeding there last year. While there, I saw four of these ducks flying circles overhead of the pond and two came in to land on the grass near the pond, then soon moved on to the pond.
It is quite a treat to see this waterfowl species, rare this far north, has again returned to nest in these small ponds. The report had a photo of eight of these ducks in the air, so it looks like a colony has been started there. I wonder if some of these were born here last year. Randy Rowe, Wooster
