Subject: [NEBirds] Red-breasted Nuthatch in Buffalo County
Reporting a possible Red-breasted Nuthatch nesting attempt in Buffalo
County, Nebraska. Last Friday (30 May 2025) a friend living 4 miles west of
Kearney (Cedar Hills neighborhood) sent photos asking if I could identify
this bird and explain what it is doing to temporarily exposed foam
insulation on their building. See attached photos. Looks to me like it is
trying to excavate a nest cavity. I'm told the foam is 2 inches thick over
a cement wall. Successful nesting is unlikely as new siding will cover the
foam, but extra points to the nuthatch for a novel try. Ponderosa pines,
planted by the owner 39 years ago, line the property border.
