Yesterday morning I arrived at Sutro Baths to an impressive group of Snowy
Egrets. I did a quick count of 13, then set up my scope and watched the
event for a while. Around 6:45, the number peaked at 19, with all gathered
around the south end of the Bath pool, in the marsh and on the sea wall
with gulls. Only two birds were actively fishing the water’s edge, the
rest were standing alone or interacting with each other. I have no idea
whether this represented a migratory event or a disruption at a nearby
colony, as the birds slowly dispersed in various directions. By 9, there
were only two birds in the Baths and four fishing the outgoing tide.
Other species included a few of the three regular loons heading north,
Brandt’s Cormorant numbers finally lowering to the normal thousand or so, a
Wandering Tattler, and my first-of-season Heermann’s Gulls, two young and
one adult passing the terrace and continuing northwards. There were also a
few distant whale spouts.
