5/28, Milford- Connecticut Audubon Coastal Center. 9:30am-1PM Low tide
rising, overcast, 60F.
Very busy again at the coastal center with enthusiastic class visitors and
many first time visitors.
Our ospreys put on a nice show, as the male brought in a fish, and the
female was feeding the 3 chicks (2 recently hatched). Our Purple Martin
colony had many flying over the marsh, bringing in nesting materials and
lots of vocalization. 3 Purple martins had orange leg bands on their left
legs.
I spent about 45 minutes on the LIS side, and by the lagoon. There was a
very vocal Clapper Rail by the lagoon edge, with 4 Great Egrets in the
lagoon. Dunlin, Red Knots, Ruddy Turnstones, Semipalmated Sandpipers,
Semipalmated Plovers, Least Sandpipers all along the shoreline, along with
RB gulls & Herring gulls and a Great Black backed gull. Several Piping
Plovers with 2 on nests. A juvenile Bald Eagle flew over and was chased by
2 Oystercatchers.
On the marsh side: In addition to our Osprey family, there were 4 other
ospreys perched on logs/branches in the marsh, 4 Mute Swans, 2 American
Black ducks, about 60 Brant & 8 DC Cormorants flew over.
On the grounds & feeders: 8 House finches, House sparrows, 3 Song
sparrows, 3 Tree swallows- 1 by a nest box,
a Cowbird, 6 Common Grackles, 2 Catbirds, 1 Mockingbird, 6 Mourning
Doves, very vocal Carolina Wrens and a House wren, several Robins,
Starlings, 2 Cardinals and 1 Blue Jay.
Full report on Ebird.
