A western tanager recently spent several days in the trees around my apartment in South Berkeley (May 14-17). I woke up most days to his song. He called often from the treetops where I couldn’t get a glimpse, but a couple times I got to watch him take a bath in the wet grass below my neighbor’s orange tree. Such a treat.
Last year in May there was a day when an entire flock of them descended on my neighbor’s yard for an afternoon. It was incredible! They seem to pass through here in May, and I’ll look forward to the beauties next year.

On Tuesday May 26, we saw a male & female pair of Western Tanagers on Mitchell Canyon Rd below Mt Diablo, just about a quarter mile north of the parking area along the trail (dirt road).
Phainopepla near the north end of the Globe Lily Trail too!
(Merlin picked up a Western Tanager song there too, but we didn't sight it.)

Subject: [EBB-Sightings] Western Tanager at Lower Wildcat Creek
Today while conducting a site visit along Lower Wildcat Creek in North Richmond I heard (“ch-bik…ch-bik”) then saw a male WESTERN TANAGER in the trees west of Giaramita Street at the entrance to Verde Elementary School (37.96081, -122.36348). I first heard it calling from a stand of tall cottonwoods at 1pm then was able to get a visual confirmation after it flew into the clump of willows adjacent to and west of the bridge over the creek. Seems late as a spring migrant to me but I’ll defer to those who know these things better than me. :-)
