Denison was very quiet Monday with the only high note being hearing three different Kentucky’s calling from different locations. Hopefully this means they are nesting or are going to be.
I also went to the Land Lab briefly on Monday, but aside from a Warbling Vireo, willow FCs and a Green Heron, there wasn’t really a whole lot there either.
Today Denison was still pretty quiet, but there were at least a few warblers around. I heard another Canada, but it only sang a few times and I was never able to get on it.
I found some chickadees so I stopped to look through a small mixed flock which was mostly WE and Red-eyed Vireos & a Magnolia, but then I spotted a small warbler that was greenish gray. It wasn’t the best light, but I got a pretty good look at the front portion of the bird. I could see pale gray streaking on the breast and a fine line through its broken eye ring & a sharp black bill so I believe it was an Orange-crowned. I was not able to see the undertail coverts to check for yellow. I’ve seen Orange-crowneds occ at Denison, but I think only in the fall—I’ll have to check.
I drove over to Lobdell to find the parking lot closed off for no apparent reason so that was annoying. It was starting to drizzle by then.
An E Phoebe was hanging around my backyard when I got back home.
