As I continue my journey into “Birding by Ear”, I ask myself question like…”Do detection applications track any and all bird-generated sounds or just vocalizations?” I’ve noticed neither BirdNet nor Merlin will identify an unknown by specific Woodpecker drumming/hammering sounds but I did just get a hit on the “whistling noise” when Mourning Doves take off. I always thought the Mourning Dove sound was their wings whistling as they try to get airborne. So…is it their wings or is that air escaping their breathing passages as muscles expand and contract during takeoff?
