Greetings Mendobirders -
Weather on May 24th is looking decent at this point, light to moderate NW winds, the same conditions or better than those we had on April 26th when we found 600-1000 albatrosses in Noyo Canyon including a Short-tailed and a Laysan. Although billed as "mammal dedicated" the folks at Noyo Center for Marine Conservation said that, yes, no matter what reports we get of whales in the area, we'll include a trip to the canyon to see what's there. And as we have found out there over and over, where there are marine mammals, there are also birds. Last year, on our May trip, we found a splashing spouting lunge-feeding group of 80 Humpbacks that also included about 5000 attending birds, mostly Sooty Shearwaters but also Pink-foots, 100+ Black-footed Albatross, Sabine's Gulls, jaegers, and Fork-tailed Storm-Petrels. Whether you seek birds, whales, dolphins, or all of the above plus who-knows what other marine critters, you can sign up at noyopelagics.com soon. Cost is $125 per person - the online signup will take a credit card but won't charge it, you pay at the dock.
While there, take a look at the schedule and sign up for trips scheduled for June 13 (half-day whale-watching), June 15 (all-day seabirding) and June 16 (half-day birds and mammals), or other trips later in the fall.Hope to see you out there!
