Had another good day at Chatfield - banded 44 and caught 3 more banded in prior seasons. Also caught 16 that we had caught previously this season. Most are birds that will likely stay at Chatfield and breed this summer.....they are not migrants passing through.
The bird of the day was a male American Redstart, banded by us in 2017. I think of him as the patriarch of this hardy little flock of Redstarts breeding at Chatfield, so I was very happy to see him again.
Here's the breakdown of today's 47 new birds:
Northern House Wren 1 American Robin 2 Gray Catbird 18 Yellow Warbler 9 new, 1 return (banded 2021) American Redstart 1 return (banded 2017) MacGillivray's Warbler 1 Common Yellowthroat 3 Yellow-breasted Chat 7 new, 1 return (banded 2022) Lincoln's Sparrow 1 Brown-headed Cowbird 1 American Goldfinch 1
We are banding Tuesday through Sunday (closed Mondays) through May 31, weather permitting. There are opportunities for the public to visit on weekends and occasional weekdays through the Denver Audubon website <https://www.denveraudubon.org/calendar>.
