Subject: [IN-BIRD-L] Ft. Harrison SP 5/18 Conn. and Canada Warblers, Olive-sided Flycatcher
We had an excellent bird walk, tallying 60 species, on May 18th at Ft. Harrison State Park, Indianapolis. Birds were more cooperative and we encountered multiple uncommon species. Highlights included Cerulean, Canada, Mourning, and Connecticut warblers, Olive-sided Flycatcher, and good looks at many species including Eastern Kingbird, Baltimore Oriole, Scarlet Tanager, and Purple Martin.
After walking around Delaware Lake, I led the group to near Cherry Tree parking lot where I had a singing Mourning Warbler at 7:20am. We did not hear the Mourning but a Connecticut sang for us! As we waited until it sang again, I heard a Canada Warbler that was about 20 feet away. The Canada gave a few of us quick looks. Then the Connecticut sang several times for us. Unfortunately, it stayed hidden.
As the walk proceeded through the field west of Delaware Lake parking lot someone said there's a flycatcher perched at the top of a tree. Turns out, it was an Olive-sided Flycatcher. It was close and totally in the open. We gawked at the bird for at least three minutes before continuing on towards the parking lot. In the time we watched, the flycatcher never flew. That was one very obliging Olive-sided.
The complete list is below. The LAST of the spring bird walks at Ft. Harrison will be May 25th. Meet at 8am in the NE corner of Delaware Lake parking lot.
