It was a productive morning at both reserves this morning species-wise. Some good migrants but very low numbers.
Started out hearing then seeing a Canada Warbler at Denison then was treated to a singing Wilson’s on a different trail. It also came down low enough to give good looks. Then I heard a Mourning Warbler singing softly and giving its call note occasionally. It was in an area where I’ve seen them in the past but before all the clearing. After hearing it sing a few times but not being able to spot it, I saw a twig move a little and then the singing stopped so I think it flew out the back. I stuck around but did not hear it again.
Also heard a Bay-breasted & spent some time searching for it but no luck.
I moved onto Morris Woods, and again had some nice species, but very low numbers. I initially heard a Canada singing then thought I also heard a Mourning in the same area. I switched on Merlin and Merlin picked up both songs as well. the Mourning moved right and so I gave up on the Canada to try to get on the Mourning. It sang several times and I managed to get a very brief look mostly at the back when it was about 3 feet off the ground in a thick bush. I could see the gray hood, the dull olive back & a glimpse of the yellow belly but could not see the head or neck markings before it went back down to the ground and disappeared.
It continued to move around & I could hear it sing from time to time but was never able to get another glimpse then it fell silent. While I was listening for it, a Swainson’s Thrush started singing, which is the first one I’ve had this year. I looked for it later but it had moved on.
