Except for maybe cedar waxwings at spring valley. On group. They are a late
Migrant. The breeding passerines put on a show though! Singing and being
Seen! Except for a Kentucky that was heard only. Those skulkers! I wasn’t targeting
Breeders yet. I was at the observation tower area at Caeser creek. Thinking I would
Walk the field areas for odes. No….. they must not mow here. I couldn’t even see
Where the trails were! So I switched gears and walked the paved path down
To the lake. It’s wooded. Kentucky! Singing away in the afternoon. Also some
Odes at the end of the path at the lake. Happy days! I had started at Spring
Valley. No migrants, but odes! I can’t believe I am still missing Sora for my
Big year, has to be the flooded conditions there. I think. The wind was difficult
To contend with all day. At least it was warm!
Picked up 9 year birds. At 138 for the big year! And six were Warren birds!
I haven’t birded in the spring much up here. YB Cuckoo, chat, Kentucky Warbler,
Sanderling, Turnstone, and BB Plover. Those last three were with SB Dows
At the Caesar creek marina. Roosting on a pier. Nice! I guess they felt safer
Here than the beach - with the dogs and people. I had a brief far look at a
Common/Forsters Tern. Too brief….. sigh…..it escaped me!
Cicada notes - have emerged at Spring Valley! I don't think these are brood 14
But I don’t know. Took some pics and uploaded to Inat. Those experts will
Let me know! I want them at my house in Oakley!
Snake notes - some were in the water at the marina. Feasting on bait!? I am not
Versed on what snakes eat. No camera with me - I was lugging my scope - so
Hopefully the cell phone shots are good enough for an id.
Good birding all. Monday will be Clinton!
