Since folks have been seeking Pigeon Guillemots from the John Sutter park, I thought I would share the latest Double-crested Cormorant survey from the New Bay Bridge conducted on May 14, with Meredith Elliott from Point Blue Conservation Science and Baykeeper staff who supplied their boat and captain, leaving from Oracle Park.
Great news is the count of about 785 DCCO nests is about the peak number from the late Ninties, as seen in the graph in the attached slide show. That old high count was used to design the platform space, and looking at the recent photos most the space was in use this season. I've heard antidotally that anchovy are doing well in bay, so that might account for the high point. Cormorants were actively nest building using eel grass and trash for nesting material, suggesting more nests could be in development for possibly a banner year. We saw no PIGUs from the boat near John Sutter Park unfortunately.
