The Indigo Bunting continued between 12:00 and 1:00 p.m. in the same
area as Paul's coordinates. Here are mine:
33.05281,-117.08541
It stayed on the west side of the trail. Most of the time when it sang
it was visible relatively high up or at the top of tamarisk plants, but
not the ones right on the edge of the trail. Sometimes it was partially
hidden in the plants. A couple of times it was singing from a low spot
and not visible. It disappeared for minutes at a time, and then popped
back up again. I ran into someone on my way out on the trail who said it
was quiet for a while until the sun came out, so apparently it goes
quiet and disappears for longer periods of time than what I experienced.
For anyone still planning to go out, I'd recommend listening to Charley
Herzfeld's excellent recording in eBird. My Merlin app consistently
identified the song as Lazuli. Someone else's ID'd it as both Indigo and
Lazuli.
