Hi, I keep forgetting to write this email so now it's 2 weeks late. Or maybe. Last Sunday after I got off the boat in San Diego I struggled to stay awake while driving home and had lunch with a friend near Bonelli. During lunch he mentioned that one of his kids who lives in the Chino Hills area had a bird that looked like a Zone-tailed Hawk. This triggered my memory that 48 hours earlier (Friday 5/9/2025) when I went to the Pomona Valley humane society to pay for Duke's license, and when I was walking out of there with Duke, I glanced up and there were three birds of prey: a Red-tailed Hawk, a Turkey Vulture, and a third bird that looked like a combination of the two. They were soaring above the hill that is to the west of the humane society My friend told me that the name of this hill is Elephant Hill (on the way home from work last night in traffic when I was at the 57/10 interchange I realized that that hill actually does look like an elephant laying on its left side). I tried to hustle Duke to the car to grab my binoculars, but it was too late. Then I drove around that hill taking multiple right turns and did not see any of the three raptors. I suspect that the third bird was a Zone tailed Hawk. I suspect that there is travel between Zone-tailed Hawks in the San Gabriel Mountains and Orange County along the 57 corridor.
