Subject: [hmbirds] Thursday Group Report
This morning, eight fearless birders rose early and braved the exceptionally dark and cloudy skies in search of prized warblers and other spring migrants. Though the challenging conditions made for a tough go of it, the group made the best of our walk and enjoyed what the morning had to offer.

The trail itself was rather quiet overall, with the soundscape dominated by familiar voices: the bright notes of Yellow Warblers and the persistent songs of Common Yellowthroats. Orioles were seen and heard high in the canopy, adding welcome color to the gray backdrop.

A pleasant surprise awaited us at the marsh pond, where a pair of female Hooded Mergansers were seen taking refuge—always a treat. The parking lot proved to be one of the livelier spots, with sightings of Great Crested Flycatchers and more Yellow Warblers flitting about. Great Blue Herons were spotted intermittently throughout the morning.

Cloud cover made scanning the skies difficult, with most high fliers appearing as silhouettes at best. Still, one of the standout moments came near the end of the walk as we approached the parking lot: an Orchard Oriole gave us one of the better looks of the day—likely a first-time sighting for some members.
Despite the dim light and quiet woods, everyone kept spirits high and eyes sharp. Tentatively considering Five Rivers as next Thursday’s location. As always, suggestions and feedback are welcome!
