The Town of Laurel, MD, where Dr. Chandler Robbins lived for most of his life, is planning to install an outdoor mural in his memory. The non-profit Laurel for the Patuxent is holding a fundraiser for the mural at the restaurant Olive on Main in Laurel on Wednesday, May 21, 2025. Have a good meal, mention the mural, and a portion of your bill will be donated to the mural project. See attached flier for details.
Alternatively, you may send a donation directly to Laurel for the Patuxent.
For those who didn’t know him: Chan Robbins was a renowned ornithologist who worked at Patuxent Research Refuge until his passing in 2017; he was also an inlfuential leader in the Maryland Ornithological Society. From about 1939 through the time of his death, Chan was considered the dean of Maryland birding. Notably, Chan was the lead author of the Golden Guide - Birds of North America, a ground-breaking field guide published in 1966. Chan is also the person who banded the Laysan Albatross known as Wisdom, widely regarded as the oldest living bird in the world. Chan was the founder of the North American Breeding Bird Survey and designed the protocol for Maryland’s Breeding Bird Atlas, which has been adopted by other states and by countries around the world. His contributions to ornithology are both deep and broad. Read more about Chan in a USGS press release, on the website of Friends of Patuxent, or in the dedication page of the MOS online Birder’s Guide to MD & DC.
