The very pretty male Indigo Bunting at Lake Hodges first seen 2 days ago by Mike Witmer continues in the late morning on Thursday. We are currently watching it sing at the following coordinates:
33.0527277, -117.0854130
The song starts out as a typical bunting but then is truncated and ends with a soft staccato trill, not sounding typical of what you hear on most buntings recordings. There is also Blue Grosbeak here as well and on the walk out there are certainly Bell's Vireos and Chats and Costa's Hummingbird. It's at least a 2/3 mile walk to the spot if not a little farther from the nearest parking.
Photos will be posted in eBird reports later. The bird periodically comes and sits on dead twigs in a couple tamarisk (salt cedar) and willow right along the edge of the trail, so a little patience is all that should be needed if it keeps behaving this way. Rather than playing recordings at it incessantly and perhaps moving it farther away.
