Hi Birders,
Wednesday morning, 11 birders got a windy start to the morning, but
undeterred, found an impressive 70 species on the trails around the San
Pedro House. The riparian corridor of cottonwoods and willows along the
river has been hoppin' with birds for the past 6 weeks or so, and it still
was for the walk, but what has changed is the addition of the mesquites
along Del Valle Road springing to life. Flycatchers of all types have been
at the heart of the abundance and we saw just about every expected
species. In particular, if you want to study and practice your empidonax
ID skills, the river seemed to have multiples at every point. The stars of
the show were the warblers, however, as we found a surprising 10 species
this late in May, including some nice regional migrants such as Townsend's
and Hermit. The real highlights though were two unexpected migrants, a
Northern Waterthrush and a Black and White Warbler. Also of note was a
high count of Swainson's Thushes, it seems to be a great year for them
through the area, and our first Blue Grosbeaks of the year.
The next San Pedro House birding walk will be Wednesday, May 28 at 7:00am.
The walk will start from the San Pedro House located south of Highway 90
just west of the San Pedro River. The walk will last about three hours.
Bring your own binoculars, a hat and water. Birding walks take place on the
2nd and 4th Wednesdays of the month. Start time will be 7:00am for the
last walk in May, but will shift to 6:00am for walks in June, July and
August.
