I chased after the Blue Grosbeaks Matt Mason saw yesterday at Red Barn reserve. I was a bit dismayed when I arrived as they were mowing the tall grass areas which also made it very hard to hear. Merlin finally picked up the grosbeak which I didn’t catch at first but then the bird sang again and it sounded like it was closer to the main road so I headed that direction. I was able to find one male perched & singing in a small tree in a grassy field viewed from the road. I got some record photos. I listened for others but only heard the one. With all the mowing and coming and going of arboretum vehicles, I decided to move on to Toboso Wetlands.
There were several warblers singing there and I was able to see a few of them. A Prothonotary started singing and I got great looks as it came to forage near the water. According to another birder I met there, they have nested at Toboso and he thinks they’re nesting now even though they may have lost their first nest hole to chickadees. Certainly it is singing frequently.
The trumpeter swans were there, and one of them seemed to be tending to the nest. A Spotted SP was nice to see.
After walking the trail past the iron gate, I walked the Lock Trail but the only warbler species I added was Yellow-throated. Added E Wood Peewee there as well. The area from the tunnel on is now closed and posted as private property. The main trails at Blackhand Gorge are still closed.
