This weekend, rain or shine, the Anti- racist Collective of Avid Birders is having a Big Day for Gaza in support of Friends of Sumud School. Big Day is an international birding event in which birders attempt to identify and record as many different species as they can in 24 hours. It's spring migration in the northern hemisphere, and that means birds are on the move, wearing their breeding plumage, and singing. ( https://ebird.org/globalbigday)
But for Palestinians under occupation, that kind of freedom of movement is unthinkable, and after a year and a half of Israel's siege on Gaza, all humanitarian aid is blocked, and the people of Gaza are starving.
Amidst these dire conditions, Palestinians like Enaam give us a glimmer of hope. Enaam is a displaced English teacher who started the Sumud school for displaced children in Gaza. Her team needs funds for repairs and supplies.
Tomorrow, on Big Day, the Anti- racist Collective of Avid Birders Leadership Team is pledging 25 cents to Friends of Sumud School for each different species of bird that we find.
Deborah and Caroline will be out and about looking for birds from before dawn until after sunset tomorrow, and other Anti- racist Collective of Avid Birders leaders will be adding to our total counts from our public birding events (and other outings) this weekend.
