4/16-Milford, Connecticut Audubon Coastal Center, 10am-1PM. low tide-rising, very windy, 47F, cloudy. Very windy on the marsh, with waves and the current moving the Brant and other waterfowl around. Many visitors today, several who watch our ospreys on the osprey cam. Plus- there were 2 Purple martins seen this morning. First one sitting on the gourd tower and in the afternoon- two were flying around. We put out some dried mealworms, since it is cold and windy. On the marsh: About 25 Gadwall, 2 Mute swans, about 200 Brant throughout the marsh, 2 American Oystercatchers, 4 American Black ducks, about 56 Green winged teal, 2 Canada Geese in the marsh grass further out. Our female osprey was on the nest most of the morning in incubation pose. The male was sitting on the island most of the morning, then around 12:40pm, he flew onto the nest, took over the incubating and the female flew off. One Herring gull flying around with a clam in its beak and getting chased mercilessly by 3 other Herring gulls. On the grounds & feeders: 1 Northern Mockingbird, 1 Eastern Phoebe, 1 Chipping sparrow, 1 Northern Cardinal, 3 American Robins, 4 Mourning doves, 1 Song sparrow, 2 White throated sparrows, 15 House sparrows, 4 House finches, 6 Juncos, some grackles and Red winged blackbirds.
