Hello SBB'ers, Today, Linda Sullivan and I led a trip to Almaden Lake in San Jose joined by 11 enthusiastic birders who thoroughly enjoyed the show put on by the herons and egrets on the island, and great looks at a red-shouldered hawk harassing a red-tailed hawk, talons out!
We had a nice talk about heron breeding and nesting behavior and the importance of respecting nesting activity.
A few expected species were absent, but we saw all 4 herons and some were able to get looks at a Bald Eagle flyover and a fleeting look at a Hooded Oriole after listening to its 'wheet' call. Our total for the day was 38 species. https://ebird.org/checklist/S225318950
