Hi all -
I led a store walk this morning at Shoreline Lake in Mountain View. We
parked on Terminal and walked along the south edge of the lake and then
looked over into the bay. I have to saw there was little action in the
songbird category. Other than a *NORTHERN MOCKINGBIRD* The *BROWN-HEADED
COWBIRDS* seemed to be the most vocal. Still a few *WHITE-CROWNED
SPARROWS* around and the only *GOLDEN-CROWNED SPARROW* we saw was still
going in breeding plumage.
The *AMERICAN SKIMMERS* were putting on a show as they flew around the
island several times. One pair were doing an impressive aerial maneuver
and were either courting or fighting. The *BLACK OYSTERCATCHER* was on
the island. Only one *AMERICAN AVOCET* was visible on the island, but
the *BLACK-NECKED STILTS* were found throughout our morning.
A pair of *SURF SCOTERS* were in the lake in addition to a few *COMMON
GOLDENEYES*.
When we turned to look out onto Pond A7 and Charleston Slough the most
numerous ducks were the *NORTHERN SHOVELS*. *RUDDY DUCKS* came in 2nd
with a few *CANVASBACK*, *CINNAMON TEAL*, and *BUFFLEHEAD DUCKS*. There
were loads of shorebirds out on the exposed mudflats but beyond where we
went today.
The *EARED GREBE* were in their beautiful breeding plumage. We also
observed both a *WHITE-TAIL KITE* and a female *NORTHERN HARRIER*.
The *BARN SWALLOWS* were the most numbers of our swallows.
Nothing terribly rare, but a great day to be on the bay. We ended with
52 species.
*P.S.The Santa Clara Valley Bird Alliance Spring Birdathon is underway.
