I have 2 apologies: one for forwarding this, which I do because so many of us do care about the Buffalo National River, and two, because this is a late forward, as I have been offline for a week. I hope it's not too late to act.

Dear Carol Joan, The Arkansas state legislature is in session, and unfortunately, some elected officials are once again proposing legislation that threatens our most treasured waterways—like the iconic Buffalo River. We urgently need your help to oppose Senate Bill 290.
You may remember the victory in stopping a large hog farm that seriously threatened the Buffalo River watershed. Thanks to widespread advocacy, a moratorium was implemented to prevent similar permits from being issued. SB 290 would strip state agencies of the authority to enact or maintain such moratoria without explicit legislative approval—even when those agencies have the scientific expertise and environmental mission to protect Arkansas's natural resources.
If SB 290 passes, the current moratorium protecting the Buffalo River would be immediately nullified, reopening the door to polluting industrial operations like confined animal feeding facilities. This would seriously risk our clean water, native wildlife, and natural heritage—all for short-term economic gains.
Your voice matters. Together, we can defend the Buffalo River and all of Arkansas's irreplaceable waterways.
The bill has passed through the Arkansas Senate and is expected to go before the House Agriculture Committee soon. Urge your Representative to oppose Senate Bill 290. |
