The first HOODED ORIOLE has arrived at McClellan Ranch and was calling loudly from the palm tree right outside my office. I saw a male fly from across the street and toward the meadow, so I expect there will be nest activity soon. We often have as many as three pairs between Linda Vista Park and Blackberry Farm, always near fan palms.
The WHITE-THROATED SPARROW is still here and was seen just outside the public restrooms beside the main parking lot. If it is not found there, it is regularly seen at the feeders. Generally speaking, Sparrow numbers have dropped a lot the past week at the Ranch.
Over the weekend, I found my first RUFOUS HUMMINGBIRD and BULLOCK’S ORIOLE during an SCVBA field trip to Spring Valley led by Connor and Liz. The female PHAINOPEPLA continues between the restrooms and the lake, and about 6 LAWRENCE’S GOLDFINCHES were a real treat.
