On Saturday, Rick Herder and I led a group up the switchbacks of the Bay Checkerspot Trail. The day wasn't all that birdy, but we did see one each of *horned lark* , *grasshopper sparrow* , *western meadowlark* , and *lark sparrow*. The *common raven* nest on the electrical tower is active, with a female presumably sitting on eggs. The best time for birding at the preserve is probably winter, when there are big flocks of western meadowlarks, horned larks, and American pipits at altitude. But there are other major attractions right now: wildflowers, of which we saw multitudes, and the titular bay checkerspot butterflies, of which we saw at least 10.
