Observation start time: 08:00:00
Observation end time: 14:30:00
Total observation time: 6.5 hours
Official Counter: David Gordon
Observers: Marilyn Feurestein , Peg Clukey
Visitors:
No visitors.
Weather:
Rain that fell overnight began to subside during the first hour of the
count and did not return until the period ended. Warm temperatures were
adjusted by the wind to make us all glad that we brought enough outerwear.
A thick layer of high clouds were mixed with lower bands that played hide
and seek with birds that tucked between the sections to make counting more
challenging. The clarity of the air was excellent at the beginning but
fell off toward the end of the period.
Raptor Observations:
Weather forecast Indicated an early end to the count but the birds knew the
strong south wind and clear skies were too good to pass up. A decent
Turkey Vulture flight steadily came through followed by a small number of
Cooper’s, Sharpies, Merlin’s, and Red-tails.
Non-raptor Observations:
An Eastern Meadow Lark and a Common Raven were the standout seasonal birds
of the hawk watch area.
Predictions:
Overnight rain will give way to cloudy skies, light north westerly winds
and temperatures in the high 20 degrees F.
