Subject: [sd-birds] Dead Sandhill Crane
I was out hiking in a dry, rocky area of dense ponderosa forest today,
about 4 miles from Sheridan Lake as the crow flies, and stumbled upon a
large pile of grey feathers I could not immediately identify. Nearby, I
found the freshly scavenged head and spine of a Sandhill Crane.
Coincidently, a flock was flying over at the same time. There's not so much
as a creek or spring around for miles. To me, this seems an odd place to
find such a thing. Did it land there by mistake and get trapped? Get killed
elsewhere and carried there? Drop dead out of the sky? Any ideas?
