Today was a voice from the past who put out the Northern Hills Bird Club weekly summary of bird sightings on a dedicated telephone line sponsored by Wharf Resources. We birded today with Kim S.who made the weekly report and is now living in Nebraska. We took Eden Road to Bear Butte Lake, Newell Lagoons , Newell Lake, then to Belle Fourche Reservoir and return to Whitewood via Crooked Oaks Road and SD 34. Our bird of the day was a perched immature Golden Eagle North of Newell right out our window. Thousands of ducks at the Belle Fourche Reservoir and other lakes gave us a total of 37 various species for today. Roadside birding has improved with more birds and species. There were lots of American Kestrels, but other raptor sightings were down with only 2 Northern Harriers, 2 Red-tailed Hawks, and no Bald Eagle sightings today
The Northern Cardinal at our feeders 1.5 miles south of Whitewood was seen April 1-2 but we were gone today 4.3, so no sighting.
