Subject: Contentious birds
The bird arguments here are over who gets to use which birdhouse. The tree swallows and bluebirds always want the prime real estate. Mind you, there are 19 nest boxes available, but some seem to be the favorites. The bluebirds usually get their way, having the advantage of building their nests earlier, although I have seen them take over a box with a nest under construction from the tree swallows. Eventually, the bluebirds and swallows are often nesting in boxes that are near each other along the fence line. Right now, I’m seeing both species investigating the boxes, but no nest building yet.
We also have a phoebe vigorously attacking the “interloper” in the side mirrors on the truck, which is parked in the tractor shed, where the phoebes regularly nest.
