Seems like people aren't the only ones with short fuses these days.
The other day, I saw two Carolina wrens fighting with a third nearby. They weren't just pecking at each other, but we're locked in combat. I went outside and, standing over them, yelled at them to BREAK IT UP! They split up briefly but went at it again right at my feet. I could have bent down and picked them up. Good thing nobody witnessed my silly behavior. I take it that the two were fighting over the female rather than housing.
A little while ago, there were two male Tree swallows going at it. One had the other one pinned to the ground. There was a flutter of wings but it lasted entirely too long for my liking. I went out in case one was injured. When I got within five feet, they broke it up and flew up into the tree, chattering all the way. They are busy choosing nest boxes and starting to build nests.
Yesterday's surprise bird was a male Purple finch. This morning the first Brown Thrasher showed up.
