Subject: [NHBirds] Sharp-shinned vs Woodcock
While watching my feeders this afternoon, I noticed a flurry of flight off to the side at the wooded edge of my property. Through my binoculars, I could see an American woodcock sitting still on the leaf litter where the commotion ended. A few seconds later, a sharp-shinned Hawk swooped down and landed adjacent to the woodcock. I’m not sure if it’s camouflage confused the hawk, preventing it from landing directly on the woodcock, but it gave the woodcock enough time to slip away. After a few seconds, the sharp-shinned gave chase. Since they flew off to the side of my house, I had to run to the next window, but couldn’t relocate them. Hopefully the woodcock found a safe place to hide. I’ll have to go out at dusk tonight to see if I hear any peenting.
