A fine last day of March with 3 Black Hawks, matching 2023 for the most Black Hawks on March 31. Otherwise a light migration observed today. Late in the day the local Zonetails were hunting the cottonwoods along the river. They had better luck today, with one taking a small bird with a dive into the tall cottonwoods behind the picnic area. Later a second zonetail was plucking and eating another bird on the wing, hanging in the air behind the first base dugout.
The dogged counters from HWI will continue documenting the migration through the end of April. No young (brown) Gray Hawks or Black Hawks have arrived. We expect a few soon. We’re wondering if there will a second wave of Broadwings or if the March Surprise was all we’ll see. Swainson’s migration is not over yet. Then there’s Kite migration…who knows!
As slow or hot as the days may be, I think we’ll stay just a little bit longer.
