At about 5:30 PM late yesterday (April 1--not a joke), Charley Herzfeld photo'd a gull at Children's Pool in La Jolla that he wondered if it were a Lesser Black-backed but then sent out photos for ID assistance several hours later. The bird, in fact, seems to be a reasonable candidate for a second-cycle Yellow-footed Gull. The last record of this species in San Diego County was in 2006. Photos cannot be attached to listserv posts, but I'll attach one of Charley's to a WhatsApp alert shortly, so people can see what the bird looks like there. It certainly does have bright yellow legs and feet.
Needless to say, a number of us will be out today (Weds) looking for this bird, so if you'd like to join in, please do! The more eyes the merrier and the more real estate covered the better. Of course, the bird could be just about anywhere, including having totally disappeared into the anonymity of a gull's world.
