Work continues toward changes in official bird names despite opposition,
left and right. Among changes being considered, some species have been
narrowed to two options, others remain open to suggestions. Birders are
encouraged to weigh in via a voting and suggestion process (see below).
Species narrowed to two options are:
Mexican Whip-poor-will: Southwest American Whip-poor-will or American
Southwestern Whip-poor-will
Canada Jay: Northwest American Jay or American Northwestern Jay
Canada Warbler: Fifty-first State Warbler or Tariff Warbler
Canada Goose: Great American Goose or Ubiquitous Goose
Bald Eagle: Great American Eagle or Combover Eagle
Species under consideration for expedited name change with suggestions
solicited include:
Any bird with California in its current name (Towhee, Thrasher,
Gnatcatcher, Quail, Gull);
Any bird with Black, White, Red, Yellow, or Brown in its name, as the
racial references are divisive .
You have the opportunity to vote and submit suggestions to:
Committee for Standardized Proposed Ornithological Orthology Folly
1600 Pennsylvania Avenue, Washington D.C. 20001
This is not an equal opportunity. Votes and suggestions accompanied by
donations (size matters) will be given greater weight.
For additional information see the Committee’s homepage at w.w.w.spoof.org
