David and all,
I did a quick check of CBC data from the Palo Alto CBC (which runs in both San Mateo and Santa Clara) for several recent years (CBC data for Palo Alto and the other 3 Santa Clara County CBCs can be found here: https://scvbirdalliance.org/past-christmas-bird-counts ). There is definitely a noticeable decline in Fox Sparrow numbers in the past two years, at least in raw data. It is worth noting that the counts in Palo Alto have been held in fairly poor weather for the last two years, however, which may have negatively impacted numbers as well. With the exception of the past two years, Fox Sparrow counts have fluctuated between 40 and 60 birds in the years that I checked data for. It could be worth checking older data as well for any longer-term trends in numbers.

2018-2019 count: 42
2019-2020 count: 61
2020-2021 count: 58
2021-2022 count: 46
2022-2023 count: 67
2023-2024 count: 19 + 1 Slate-colored type
2024-2025 count (this year's count): 12
