Subject: [GeneseeBirds-L] Cuylerville: Lapland Longspurs
There was a flock or 30 or more Lapland Longspurs in the field between Perry and Jones Bridge Rds. this morning, most in breeding or near breeding plumage. One or more were singing a couple times, a couple others were chasing around as if in some courting mode. It’s a very pretty song which I haven’t heard here since about 25 years ago (in same season by the Geneseo airfield). There are a few Horned Larks in the fields, also courting and getting ready to nest. The Longspurs will head out soon for the far north.
The longspurs were in the field west from the farm path that runs north from Perry Rd. towards the red farm buildings. You can drive or walk about half way across that path (don’t drive through the house and barns). This morning I stayed in my car - if one gets out they’r likely to fly - and it was quite a number . I neglected to turn off my headlights this morning and came up with dead battery - the result being staying there with all the longspurs until my wife came over with the cables to get me going. The longspurs were nice company, though it did get pretty cold without the heater.
