Subject: [sd-birds] Day county
Yesterday (Friday) morning, I did some birding in Day County, especially
around the town of Butler. Fairly early in the morning, I heard the
peenting of an American Woodcock near a wetland. Hard to say whether it was
thinking of breeding there or just a migrant. Flocks of migrating geese
seem to be thinning out a bit. First of year birds included DC Cormorants,
Tundra Swans, and Blue-winged Teal.

Mid-morning I visited the Butler cemetery where I found a nice flock of
early migrant songbirds, including a Winter Wren, Golden-crowned Kinglets,
and Fox Sparrows.

I then headed to Bitter Lake but it was still about 90% frozen. However, I
did see a Snowy Owl on a fencepost on the east side of the lake, the first
I've seen in a long time.
