Just fyi, I have found two common cranes just south of elm creek wtp. I have just posted it to eBird. I was with the gentleman from China, who is very familiar with common cranes. We heard and recorded them. He got video, and lots of photos which I will post later. There’s an access road between sections just east ofthe Casey’s and we were able to get a little closer to them. We were able to move the scope from one to the other, but they were too far apart to get into one picture. This is in the same spot one was seen yesterday, which is why I came here.

Common crane observed at maintenance shed at Clear Creek. Unmistakable. Likely same bird seen on 24th.

Potentially a 4th bird! 30 miles west of the report in Gibbon. Reported to ebird just now

I'm a fan of that wild speculation! After nearly 9 hours looking through cranes this year even when I KNEW a Common was likely around, we had nothing. That (on top of the needle-in-a-haystack-style stories I've heard) leads me to wildly speculate that the detection rate could be something like 20% or lower, meaning there could be 15+ birds. Fun to think about.

I have no science to back this up, but I wonder if climate change could be bringing their breeding ranges even closer together, causing some mixing post-breeding. Just for fun I looked at the Sandhill Crane reports in Eurasia in the past 10 years<https://ebird.org/map/sancra?neg=true&env.minX=&env.minY=&env.maxX=&env.maxY=&zh=false&gp=true&ev=Z&excludeExX=false&excludeExAll=false&mr=1-12&bmo=1&emo=12&yr=last10> and there are quite a few, even though ebird isn't really the main platform over there. Reports in Japan, China, Singapore, Taiwan, and in European countries like Sweden, Germany, and even Hungary.

Based on the frequency of known occurrence over the years and the low probability of detection and distance between sightings, I would put my money on the likelihood that there have been at least 3 different Common Cranes in Nebraska so far this spring. The fact that 3 different Common Cranes have been detected this spring (assuming my assumptions are correct, which is what it is), makes me wonder how many Common Cranes are migrating through Nebraska this spring? 5, 8, 12? The great thing about wild speculation is I can't be proven wrong. Congrats on the relocation originally found by Matt Wieseler.

Common Crane relocated at Clear Creek WMA in Keith county! Found this morning by May y from game and parks. Not sure what's more likely: a 2nd bird, or the same bird traveling 200 miles west, probably the latter.

Another crane, or perhaps the same one, was relocated this afternoon 40 miles west, near Gibbon in Buffalo County.
