I checked out the Alum Creek Beach yesterday since I had to be up there for errands. Got my FOY Brown Thrasher, singing away. There were also at least four Horned Grebes, most coming into breeding plumage. Couple of Pied-billed Grebes also. There were 2 Com Loons, also in breeding plumage.
The only ducks were Bufflehead and Lesser Scaup. There were a couple impressive rafts of coots, prob over 200. Several Tree Swallows.
Denison was very quiet today with not much of note. I discovered they have taken out a huge swath of undergrowth on the far side of swallow field, which was another hot migrant trap. I have no idea whether migration is going to be any good at Denison after all this “invasive” removal. Very depressing.
Morris Woods had more activity including a perched & singing E Phoebe and good views of an adult Red-headed WP as well as some juncos. Wood Ducks.
Most interesting bird was on the drive back near the intersection of Dry Creek and Louden when I caught sight of a gray & white bird that I thought might be a male N Harrier, but it turned out to be a nonbreeding-plumaged adult Bonaparte’s Gull. I don’t think I’ve ever seen them inland, so that was quite interesting. I tried to get some photos, but my camera was having difficulty focusing on it against the woods at a far distance but good bino/scope views. White tail, white wedges on wings.
